Optimised Leadership is about enriching every tool in a leader’s toolbox, enabling access to a broader range of leadership styles through the lens of Emotional Intelligence.

Leaders who excel in emotional intelligence areas can more seamlessly switch between styles, adapting to each situation with greater effectiveness. This mastering allows leaders to apply any of Goleman’s six leadership styles—Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting, or Commanding—in a way that resonates with their team. This adaptability transforms each style into a powerful tool for driving engagement and achieving success.

Goleman’s leadership styles are the result of an extensive three-year study involving over 3,000 executives. These styles are most effective when applied situationally, enabling leaders to craft a dynamic and flexible approach that responds to the unique emotional climate of their teams. By doing so, leaders ensure that each style is not only effective but also creates a lasting, positive impact.

Here you will find a guide to Goleman’s six leadership styles:

 1. First explore the table to identify the styles including positive and negative sides of each leadership style.

 2. Then understand how each style is suited to different organisational conditions.

 3. And finally investigate how you can further enhance your leadership toolkit by consciously altering your behaviour towards each style.

The higher a leader scores on the 4 Emotional Intelligence areas of Optimised Leadership, the easier and more flexible the leader will be able to switch between the leadership styles, and have an understanding of where and when a style is better to use.

Consider:

  -  Which Leadership style do you master?

  -  Which Leadership style did you apply last week?

  -  Do you have a natural preference for one style? Or do you shift consciously between various?
